GO RHODY!
The Runnin’ Rams are 10-1 after defeating Drexel 80-79 on the road tonight, Lamonte Ulmer with the tip-in with 1.7 remaining.
Now, I love me some Rams basketball. They’re 10-1, so they have the best winning percentage in the conference. But if the past, say, four years are any indication, they’re going to go into conference play with the best winning percentage in the conference, then bend over at the mere sight of Dayton, Xavier, and Temple.
Siiiiiigh.
Well, anything’s possible. Maybe Rhody and The Hawk will renew their feud and brawl on live television again. Who knows?
"Your support continues to make all the difference, and in the spirit of the holiday season, we hope that you will consider making a year-end gift to the Fund for URI."
Or, how about I give you the $1,082 I owe you for tuition and you stop asking me for money? There, it’s a gift to both of us.
Just for reference, this is where I was sitting. Between this and the fact that I’d never photographed a basketball game before, I think I did pretty well.
Probably my favorite picture from the day, Lamonte Ulmer and his Eddie House socks complete an alley-oop.
Perhaps it’s sad that the Game of the Year for Rhode Island hoops fans is an interconference matchup. Not much of a rivalry there, perhaps, since there isn’t much at stake besides state bragging rights (which mean nothing since the local news outlets continue to lick Friar taint no matter how well or poorly the team does). Besides, the Runnin’ Rams are notorious in the last few years for dominating the interconference schedule before bending over for Dayton, Xavier, Temple, and Charlotte.
However.
It’s my fifth year at URI and this is our third time hosting the annual Friars game in that span. I’ve never been to a playoff game for a major professional sport, but I can assure you that few joints jump quite like the Ryan Center when the Friars roll into town. The place only seats about 7,300 for basketball, but it gets loud, and the fans can shake the building. We get up for this game. The men’s basketball program is popular here (of course it is; I told you about our football team), but this game is on another level. Four hours after reserved student tickets were released, I wound up with a fifth-row 300-level ticket — they start in the 100-level student sections and work their way up — and they completely sold all of the seats, student and general public alike, the next day.
Yeah, we’re not a big basketball school. Fine, whatever. But we have a hell of a program and great fans. This is going to be a great game. And I will be there, partly ‘cause I haven’t been to a live sporting event since July and I’m kind of jonesing, yes, but mostly because it’s going to kick ass.
Bleed Keaney Blue. Go Rhody.
