Letters are an inherently two-dimensional affair. They can convey deep meaning, but are confined to the flat surface of the page. Ji Lee, a designer now with Facebook, was playing around with some 3-D software and noticed that he could rotate litters around their central axis. All of a sudden, they became toy-like shapes.

He was able to use the letter as a physical object, to break away from the linear and build visual representations made from the actual letters of the word. 

For starters, can you figure out the words in the lower left? If you feel like that’s too easy, Lee created the world in the bottom right for you to explore (Hint: Try to find “ROCKET”).

Numerous candidates have developed a pattern of embracing various antiscience positions from the denial of climate change to the assertion that stem cell research is “killing children,” in order to create controversy and reinvigorate sagging poll numbers. This is presumably based on the candidates’ belief that evangelical voters are antiscience.

This sort of brinksmanship with reason is not only dangerous for science - it is dangerous for democracy itself. The United States was founded on the principle that each individual could rationally ascertain the truth of things for him or herself, and therefore a government of, by and for the people would be more just and more effective than a government by the authoritarian edicts of a King or Pope. That means a government whose decisions are based on the best available evidence.

Neil deGrasse Tyson is behind the only major technical change in theTitanic re-release

It took James Cameron 60 weeks to prepare Titanic for its rerelease, but apart from remastering the original at 4k resolution and converting it to stereoscopic 3D, nothing about the movie has really changed.

Well, almost nothing.

According to Cameron: “Neil deGrasse Tyson sent me quite a snarky email saying that, at that time of year [April 15, at 4:20 am], in that position in the Atlantic in 1912, when Rose is lying on the piece of driftwood and staring up at the stars, that is not the star field she would have seen.”

“And with my reputation as a perfectionist, I should have known that and I should have put the right star field in. So I said ‘All right, send me the right stars for that exact time and I’ll put it in the movie.’”

So Tyson did just that, and Cameron re-shot the scene. According to the Telegraph , it is the only major technical change in the film’s re-release.

I cannot contain the love I have for Neil deGrasse Tyson.  Seriously.

I listened to him telling Stephen Colbert this story and nearly peed myself laughing. I shall link to it again for everyone’s pleasure.
