I'm a fool to do your dirty work
Light the candle, put the lock upon the door
You have sent the maid home early, like a thousand times before
Like the castle in its corner in a medieval game
I foresee terrible trouble, and I stay here just the same
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - “Superstition”
from Live Alive
This is my favorite cover of any song, ever. It’s so true to the spirit of the original, not missing a beat as it goes from the funk and soul of Mr. Wonder’s version to the blues-rock jam of Mr. Vaughan.
And if you’ve never seen the video, you need to see it. One, it’s funny, and two, there is a special cameo at the end.
Jim Croce - “Operator (That’s Not the Way It Feels)”
from You Don’t Mess Around with Jim
Robert Christgau once opined that “the secret flaw of the archetypal singer-songwriter might be songwriting,” and if you listen to enough singer-songwriters, it’s hard to disagree with him. Unless you’re talking about Jim Croce, who had a real gift for storytelling in music.
Operator, could you help me place this call?
‘Cause I can’t read the number that you just gave me
There’s something in my eyes, you know it happens every time
I think about the love that I thought would save meBut isn’t that the way they say it goes?
But let’s forget all that
And give me the number if you can find it
So I can call just to tell them I’m fine and to showI’ve overcome the blow
I’ve learned to take it well
I only wish my words
Could just convince myself
That it just wasn’t real
But that’s not the way it feels

Edgar Winter Group - “Frankenstein”
from They Only Come Out at Night
Steely Dan - “Midnight Cruiser”
from Can’t Buy a Thrill
Felonious, my old friend
Step on in and let me shake your hand
So glad that you’re here again
For one more time, let your madness run with mine
Streets still unseen, we’ll find somehow
No time is better than now
Steely Dan - “Brooklyn (Owes the Charmer Under Me)”
from Can’t Buy a Thrill
Now, I like Aja and all, but I think it’s overrated — it’s sort of an empty record, trying too hard to be erudite, coming off a bit holier-than-thou. Can’t Buy a Thrill is, I think, Becker and Fagen’s best work, even though I have no bloody idea what this song is about. But that’s okay, since no one else does, either.
A race of angels bound with one another
A dish of dollars laid out for all to see
A tower room at Eden Rock, his golf at noon for free
Brooklyn owes the charmer under me
His lady’s aching to bring a body down
She daily preaches on where she wants to be
An evening with a movie queen, a face we all have seen
Brooklyn owes the charmer under me
A case of aces done up loose for dealing
A piece of island cooling in the sea
The whole of time we gain or lose and power enough to choose
Brooklyn owes the charmer under me

Billy Preston - “Will It Go Round in Circles”
from Music Is My Life
No song should be this simple and this much fun.
I’ve got a song, I ain’t got no melody
I’m-a gonna sing it to my friends
I’ve got a song, I ain’t got no melody
I’m-a gonna sing it to my friendsWill it go round in circles?
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky?
Will it go round in circles?
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky?I’ve got a story, ain’t got no moral
Let the bad guy win every once in a while
I’ve got a story, ain’t got no moral
Let the bad guy win every once in a whileWill it go round in circles?
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky?
Will it go round in circles?
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky?I’ve got a dance, ain’t got no steps, no
I’m gonna let the music move me ‘round
I’ve got a dance, ain’t got no steps
