If you're a grad student/professor/someone who should have some kind of intelligence, I expect you to know the difference between "affect" and "effect." It's really not that hard.

Word to this, though I would amend it to “anyone who speaks English” since these are not uncommon words. And I’m not even asking that one know how to use “effect” as a verb and “affect” as a noun. Go with the rule of thumb that “effect” is a noun and “affect” is a verb and you will rarely be wrong. It’s that simple, methinks.
